How to Bleed Hydraulic Brakes at Home: A Beginner’s Guide

If your hydraulic bike brakes are starting to feel "spongy," or if you have to pull the lever all the way to the handlebar just to slow down, it is time for a brake bleed.

Over time, tiny air bubbles can sneak into your brake lines, or the fluid can become contaminated with dirt and heat. Because air compresses under pressure but liquid doesn’t, those tiny bubbles ruin your stopping power.

Bleeding your brakes simply means pushing out the old fluid and air bubbles and replacing them with fresh, clean fluid. While it sounds intimidating, it is a straightforward job you can absolutely do at home. Here is your step-by-step beginner's guide.


The Pre-Check: Know Your Fluid!

Before you touch a single bolt, you must check what kind of brake fluid your system uses.

  • Mineral Oil

  • DOT Fluid (DOT 4 or 5.1)

⚠️ CRITICAL SAFETY NOTE: Never mix Mineral Oil and DOT fluid. They require different seals, and mixing them will permanently destroy your braking system. Additionally, DOT fluid is corrosive to paint and skin, so handle it with care!


Tools and Supplies You’ll Need

  • A Manufacturer-Specific Bleed Kit (includes syringes, hoses, and the correct bleed block/funnel).

  • Fresh Brake Fluid (Mineral Oil or DOT, depending on your brand).

  • Hex keys / Allen wrenches (usually 2.5mm, 3mm, or 4mm).

  • Torx wrenches (often T10 or T15 for bleed ports).

  • Isopropyl Alcohol (90%+) and clean rags (for cleanup).

  • A pair of nitrile gloves and safety glasses.


Step-by-Step Bleeding Instructions

Step 1: Prep Your Bike and Remove the Wheel

First, secure your bike in a work stand if you have one. Remove the wheel from the brake you are working on. This is crucial—if you accidentally spill brake fluid on your rotor or brake pads, they will be ruined.

Step 2: Remove Pads and Insert the Bleed Block

Take out your brake pads and store them safely away from your workspace. Insert the plastic bleed block (included in your kit) into the caliper where the pads used to be. This keeps the pistons perfectly spaced and prevents them from pushing out too far while you work.

Step 3: Level the Brake Lever

Adjust your bike or handlebars so that the master cylinder (the reservoir on your brake lever) is perfectly horizontal to the ground. This ensures fluid won't spill out when you open the port.

Step 4: Connect Your Syringes/Funnel

  • For Shimano: Screw the plastic bleed funnel into the port on the brake lever and fill it about one-third full with mineral oil. At the caliper down below, attach a syringe filled with fluid to the bleed nipple.

  • For SRAM/Avid: Fill two syringes halfway with DOT fluid. Degas the fluid by pulling back on the plungers while blocking the tips to remove hidden bubbles. Thread one syringe into the lever port and the other into the caliper port.

Step 5: Push the Fluid Through (The Bleed Process)

  • Open the bleed port valves gently.

  • Slowly push the fluid from the bottom syringe (at the caliper) up toward the lever. You will see dirty fluid and air bubbles escape into the funnel or top syringe.

  • Gently flick the brake lines with your knuckles from bottom to top. This helps dislodge any stubborn air bubbles trapped along the hose walls.

  • Slowly pull back and forth on the syringes (or squeeze the brake lever gently a few times) until no more air bubbles appear.

Step 6: Close It Up and Clean Intensely

Once the bubbles completely stop, tighten the bleed port screws to the manufacturer’s specified torque.

Before you put your pads or wheel back on, spray down the entire lever and caliper with Isopropyl Alcohol and wipe it clean. Any leftover fluid will attract dirt or contaminate your pads later.

Step 7: Reassemble and Test

Reinstall your brake pads, put the wheel back on, and pump the brake lever a few times. It should feel firm, snappy, and solid—not mushy.
